WSJ reports poor treatment for Meijer Employees - Please change the "clock policy"

The Nov. 17 WSJ reports that for cashiers at Meijer:

"A clock starts ticking the instant he scans a customer’s first item, and it doesn’t shut off until his register spits out a receipt. To assess his efficiency, the store’s computer takes into account everything from the kinds of merchandise he’s bagging to how his customers are paying. Each week, he gets scored. If he falls below 95% of the baseline score too many times, the 185-store megastore chain, based in Walker, Mich., is likely to bounce him to a lower-paying job, or fire him."

The article goes on to describe elderly shoppers being rushed and employees who leave or are asked to leave because they aren't consistently at 95%.

This is disgraceful. I go to Meijer's because it is a big store that has a reputation for treating the elderly and disabled well. I may have to switch over to Wal-Mart if this policy is not changed!

Crab Cakes

May I get a list of ingredients for the crab cakes and lobster cakes that are sold in the fresh/frozen seafood department? I've asked the clerk and he said that he has no list, but that it would be good if such a list of ingredients could be posted as other people would like to know. I have a sensitivity to MSG and therefore can not purchase these products unless I know whether or not they contain MSG. I am also concerned about the amount of salt.

I have a complaint about the Meijer Brand "Lunch-umms" 5 for 5 Pizza Product with "Wonka Bottle Caps". The UPC Number is 71928381225.

This product is priced low and looked like it would taste good. However, the inclusion of the "Wonka Bottle Caps" has ruined the product. The "Wonka Bottle Caps" have a very strong odor that causes the entire product to be flavored like the candy. The pizza bread is very odor absorbent as are the two types of cheeses. I didn't even realize this product had the "Wonka Bottle Caps", I bought it for the pizza and price.

The packaging needs to be changed so that the "Wonka Bottle Caps" don't make the entire product smell and taste like them, or perhaps a less pungent snack can be included (or perhaps just have it be nothing but pizza). I had to throw away the one that I opened and I plan on returning the other two I purchased.

My mother is the world's biggest Mac&Cheese snob in the world and Kraft doesn't go on sale very often but I see the Meijer brand on sale about once every 60 days or less for 10 for $4. Well when it was on sale a couple of weeks ago I bought 4 boxes and when I cooked dinner for my mom I didn't let her see the box and all she did was rave about how good it was and this is why she only let's me buy her Kraft because they are the best. Her jaw almost hit the floor when I told her it was Meijer brand. I actually had to make some more so she could see that it came from the Meijer box. Now all I have to do is wait for it to go on sale again and stock up. Way to go Meijer.

Pepsi Retro

I know this is not about Meijer brand, but this seems to be a pretty generic forum anyway. So here goes...

I have heard that in a few weeks Pepsi will be releasing a few of their products in 'Retro' form. Being that they will be formulated with sugar instead of corn sweetener. Specifically, I believe they will be Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and may be one or two others.

Will I be able to find these at Meijer, or will I have to go 'some place else?'

Mealbox coupons

Why do you offer coupons on mealbox if cashiers won't take them? I almost always shop at store 154 on 96th street in Indy but everytime I try to use a mealbox coupon I'm told it's fake because it's an internet coupon and treated like a criminal. There have been several times where they have embarassed me so much that I just left my groceries there and went across the street to Wal-mart. I never have this problem at your washington street store I think it's 131 and even though it's out of my way I may have to start going there instead or just switch to Wal-mart completely. Has anyone else had this problem?

Going Green at our stores: Idea #3: Wind Turbines

Why don't we add wind turbines to the roofs of all of our retail stores? They couldn't be 10-feet tall but they'd be a help. If not feasible here, how about alongside the bulding: 4-6 on each side of the building leaving the front clear for customer trafic. They could help us generate our own electricity for our many uses: registers, fridges, freezers, lights, rotisseries, etc.

Why don't we add solar panels to the roofs of ALL our retail stores? That way, we could generate our own electricity for all our many uses: registers, lights, refrigerators, freezers, LP beepers, etc. Maybe do it in stages, certain stores and regions of the country done first to spread the cost over time.

Why don't we swich all stores overhead lighting from the current flourescent to the more energy efficient CFL bulbs? The energy savings could help defray the cost of the switch over. Maybe do it in stages, parts of the store first and regions of the country first to spread the cost.

Offer Meijer Insulated Fabric Bags for Transporting Frozen Foods?

Hi Folks,

As a cashier, I've had a number of customers ask about whether Meijer is going to offer an Insulated Fabric Bag for transporting frozen foods. The one most currently used by the customers is from a competitor and has a zip-top for maximum insulation.

Has this been considered as a second type of fabric bag that would offer greater insulation to our customers in exchange for a higher price point?? I'm seeing more and more customers opting for the fabric bag option in an effort to contribute to the "greener planet" effort. Just an idea. Thanks.

I know Meijer Fabric bags are priced pretty economically now at 99c, but what about if the customer could get a free one when they bought $XX worth of goods? Or what if they were priced $59c every Friday?? Have we ever tried some type of promo to add some megawattage to their sales??

What about changing the color from Blue to Earth-friendly Green and calling it "Meijer's Earth-friendly Shopping Bag" and list the following Directions: Load, Unload, Repeat; Load, Unload, Repeat, etc." Why not kick-start the Green Fabric Bag's Sales?? Remember the politician's saying of putting "a chicken in every pot?" Well at Meijer, we want to put a Meijer Fabric Shopping Bag in every shopper's hand while we put "a chicken in every pot."

I would like to upload all my photos in case my computer dies, and I know that Kodak allows you to store all your photos on their website for free as long as you order at least one print per year from them. I would much rather order prints from Meijer, so I thought I would see if Meijer also had photo sharing and online storage.

Since you have such good and frequent sales, is it possible to have a Customer Courtesy Card that we could have scanned to make sure that we take advantage of all the advertised specials. It would act like a rewards card, and only members would get the advertised discount price. With the Courtesy Card you would actually be getting a bonus discount price.

I like to make gift baskets for housewarmings, weddings, and just-because presents. So far I've done an Ice Cream theme with toppings, sprinkles, and nuts, as well as a few cute bowls from the housewares aisle, and a S'mores theme with marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate chips along side some shish-kebab skewers. I also made a popcorn basket with a big mixing bowl, microwave popcorn, and a movie. They're inexpensive to make when I use Meijer brand products.

My little sister is getting married soon, and with all the showers, parties, and the wedding itself I'm trying to think of other fun baskets to give her. Does anyone have any ideas?

I am all for saving money and will try meijer products whenever possible and for the most part I am very happy with the quality. However, I bought your microwave popcorn just to try it out and yuck almost no butter taste and there was just something else off I couldn't put my finger on. I wound up trying to give it to my grandkids when they visited and they even snubbed it. I still will give your products a try because usually I'm impressed we love your bread, milk, eggs, peanut butter, worcestershire sauce, and jammers but do something about that popcorn.

I bought the bark color dinner plates from Meijer and now they are all clearancing them out. I only bought eight and now I have broke one of them. I am now down to seven. I was wondering if there is a way to find out if there are any stores left where I can buy the large dinnerplates??? I have been to my local meijer stores and only found the smaller salad plates... Has Meijer ever run a promo where a bottle of salad dressing was half-priced if purchased with either a) a store-prepped vegetable salad or b) both a head of lettuce and 3-4 tomatoes?

Another idea for do-it-yourselfers is to include a printed sheet of paper with all store-prepped salads that measures about the size of a 3x5 card with the instructions for making Homemade 1000 Island dressing: just mix several tablespoonfuls of refrigerated mayonaise and several teaspoons of refrigerated chili sauce and mix well (a good-sized measuring cup can serve as the "mixing bowl".) Spoon heartily over the salad and enjoy! In this case, the customer could get half price on the jar of mayo and bottle of chili sauce. This 1000 Island Dressing Recipe could be the first in a series called " the Meijer Method to Quick & Easy Dining!"
